Fire crews were called to Morpeth town centre after a blaze broke out in a chip shop.

The incident happened at Maylia’s fish and chip shop in Newgate Street on Saturday when a commercial fryer caught fire at about 10pm.

Due to smoke from the blaze the Nadon Thai restaurant was evacuated.

Three fire engines from Pegswood attended and crews used four breathing apparatus and two hose reels to extinguish the flames.

A fire safety officer also attended to investigate the cause of the blaze.

The street was blocked off by police until about 11.30pm.
