The party was in full swing at Morpeth’s Renwick House on Saturday as resident Emily Manley celebrated her century.

About 140 friends and family attended the 100th birthday party, along with Mayor Joan Tebbutt and her escort Alison Byard. Great-grandchildren Olivia and Sidney meant that four generations of the Manley family were together.

Mrs Manley, who received the traditional letter from the Queen, was born in Blaydon and lived in Newcastle. She was married to Walter and has two daughters, Vivien and Hazel.

She says that hard work is the secret to a long life.
