From Saturday girl to a successful solo first year

A PONTELAND woman’s prescription for success at a local pharmacy has worked well in her first year in charge.

Jessica Taylor, who was a Saturday girl for previous owners Peter and Pam Hopley when she was a student at the high school, took on the business in Brewery Lane in January 2011 and immediately looked to expand the services on offer.

She soon bought a vehicle to make deliveries across the area and the premises have got bigger as a former dental surgery upstairs has been converted into storage space, a dispensing area and a new staff room and office.

Taylor’s Pharmacy is now processing prescriptions for family pets and farms and selling products such as worming tablets and flea tick medicine.

Works have also been carried out downstairs to give the facility a more modern look.

Ms Taylor said: “I still kept in touch with the Hopleys after finishing as a Saturday girl there and in late 2010 I found out it was up for sale.

“I was working at a Rowland’s Pharmacy at the time and felt that I was ready to take on my own pharmacy.

“The first priorities were to give the downstairs area a bit of a revamp and advertise the fact that we were now doing deliveries across Ponteland and surrounding areas. In the last couple of weeks we’ve also got a smart car to help with them, which will be used throughout the day as all our staff have been insured for it.

“As well as introducing animal prescriptions, I removed most of the toiletries because they are widely available at other shops in Ponteland and replaced them with shabby chic and vintage chic products.

“Since I started we have tripled the amount of community dosette trays we put up and deliver weekly and we needed more space in which to operate.

“Thankfully, we were able to take on the former dentist area and turn it into some sleek and modern rooms that serve a few different purposes.

“Things have gone better than expected in my first year and in the next 12 months I will keep building up the business and hopefully bring in some new customers.

“In an ideal world we will do well enough to take on another member of staff so I can have one or two days off a week and do a refit downstairs because it hasn’t had one for a while.”
