Garden plans for waste site

A NEW community garden area could be created in Morpeth.

Planning permission is being sought from Northumberland County Council to provide the plot at a redundant allotment in Tommy’s Field. The area is currently wasteland as it is unsuitable for cultivation.

The project is being led by the Tommy’s Field Allotment Association, Greater Morpeth Development Trust and Groundwork North East. Morpeth Town Council has approved of using the plot as a garden provided that it technically remains a statutory allotment.

Council Clerk Gillian Turner said: “It is part of the allotment site at the bottom of Tommy’s Field. You can’t get an allotment there because the tree roots have come through so it is just wasteland at the moment.”
