FOR the past three years, Morpeth Lions Club has been asking customers of the town’s travel agents if they have ‘any spare change’.
As usual, the Lions’ appeal has met with a great response from our generous community.
In this time, as well as the cash contributions in pounds sterling, there have also been large collections of unwanted foreign coins and notes.
While many of the coins and notes cannot be exchanged in the normal way, there is a Lions Clubs’ scheme that makes them of value.
For a number of years, British Lions Clubs have been supporting medical care for children in countries that were formerly part of Yugoslavia. The Lions’ charity A Gift for Living has contacts that will buy old currency from European Union countries, as well as unwanted foreign or pre-decimalisation coins.
The Managers of Thomas Cook, Dawson and Sanderson and Thomsons are all agreed: ‘While we may be rivals in business we can be united in helping this worthy cause.’
So, if any Morpeth residents have unwanted coins in their possession, Morpeth Lions Club will be very grateful if they will call at the travel agencies and donate these.
