A MORPETH councillor will be checking up on the NHS for a new public service role.
Morpeth Town councillor Derek Thompson has been elected a public governor of the Northumberland and Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust.
Coun Thompson, who will represent South Northumberland, has long had an interest in health issues and was previously head of the regional hospital school at Stannington Children’s Hospital.
He has also carried out work for disabled organisations.
He said: “I will be responsible for representing the interests of the public and partner organisations in the local health trust.
“There are some big issues at the moment, like the development of the emergency hospital in Cramlington, care of the elderly and aftercare from hospital. These are important issues that affect people in the area.”
Coun Thompson will take up his new role in January.
