CAMPAIGNERS are urging North East MPs to throw their weight behind the decision to keep children’s heart surgery in Newcastle.
Earlier this month the Joint Committee of Primary Care Trusts decided that children’s congenital cardiac services would remain at the city’s Freeman Hospital as it rationalised provision elsewhere.
Parents who had seen the work of the unit at first hand were delighted at the news and a party was organised to celebrate.
However, families in Leeds have asked for a review of the decision as their hospital is one of three identified to stop performing children’s heart surgery from 2014.
Supporters of the Freeman are now urging people to write to their local MP asking them to support and uphold the committee’s conclusion.
