NHS bosses in the region have paid tribute to staff following intense pressure on the service.
Recent severe weather, flu-related illnesses and other serious admissions have all taken their toll on the NHS, but the situation is now easing.
NHS North East Deputy Medical Director Dr Tricia Cresswell said: “We are now starting to see a sustained reduction in the number of people seriously ill with flu in critical care.
“The more general pressures, which we always see at this time of year, are also easing and trusts are now getting back to business as usual.
“It has been a very busy time and we all need to thank NHS staff right across the region who have been working exceptionally hard.”
