Cancer patients’ experience of care in Northumberland and North Tyneside hospitals are still among the best in the country, according to recently released results.
Northumberland Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust came sixth in a league table covering health bodies across England. A range of measures are used to produce the rankings.
It is the fourth successive year that Northumbria Healthcare has been named in the top 10 by Macmillan Cancer Support. The charity analyses key areas of the annual Cancer Patient Experience survey commissioned by NHS England, focusing on the performance of hospitals.
The measures include whether cancer patients’ diagnosis and treatment options were explained clearly to them, whether they felt supported in their care and whether they felt they were treated with respect.
Gill Starkey, lead cancer nurse at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are delighted that once again we have been named among the best in the country for cancer patient experience.
“We are passionate about ensuring every one of our patients receives the highest quality of care and a first-class experience and this latest accolade reflects the dedication of our hard-working teams.
“Like Macmillan, we believe passionately that patient experience is a vital component in a cancer patient’s care and we are committed to doing all we can for our patients and supporting them and their families every step of the way.”
Teams from the trust provide specialist care to hundreds of patients in hospital, in the community and at home every day.
