A health trust has notched up a hat-trick of honours.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been named best in the country for patient experience and one of the top NHS organisations for providing safe, high quality patient care, just over a week after being rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The trust won the CHKS Top Hospitals 2016 patient experience award and has been named in its Top Hospitals for 2016, an accolade given to the country’s 40 top performing organisations, for the ninth consecutive year.

CHKS awarded Northumbria Healthcare the patient experience accolade following an evaluation of its performance in the CQC inpatient survey, CQC maternity survey, PROMS (patient reported outcome measures), Friends and Family test scores and PLACE (patient-led assessments of the care environment) scores.

The trust is widely seen as having one of the most comprehensive patient experience programmes in the NHS and, alongside national surveys, gathers feedback from thousands of patients every year in order to continually improve.

The CHKS Top Hospitals programme celebrates excellence and recognises healthcare providers that demonstrate outstanding achievements in healthcare quality and improvement.

It is regarded as a mark of excellence in the NHS and is based on the evaluation of more than 20 indicators of clinical effectiveness, health outcomes, efficiency, patient experience and quality of care.

David Evans, chief executive of Northumbria Healthcare, said: “Making sure every one of our patients has the best experience possible with us is at the heart of everything we do and we are delighted that this work has been recognised on the national stage.

“The Top Hospitals awards are an excellent marker of overall patient care and we are pleased that, once again, we have been named among the best in the country by continuing to deliver the highest levels of quality and safety in the services we deliver in hospitals and the community across Northumberland and North Tyneside.

“This would not have been possible without the continued hard work and dedication of our staff and I would like to thank them all for their efforts.

“Following on from our outstanding rating from the CQC, this is further fantastic news for our staff, our patients and stakeholders and while it has topped off an excellent couple of weeks for the trust, we will always strive to do even better for our patients.”

Sarah Atkinson, managing director of CHKS, said: “Providing a good patient experience should be at the core of all activity and Northumbria Healthcare has demonstrated how that’s achievable. From our analysis the trust is worthy winners of this award and should be proud.

“These awards recognise the outstanding performance in those areas which we believe are critical to delivering high quality care and we are delighted that Northumbria Healthcare is one of our 2016 Top Hospitals.”

The awards were held in London and attended by more than 250 guests, including leaders from across the healthcare sector.
