Hopes rise for start to work

A MORPETH business group is confident that work will soon start on improvements to a busy thoroughfare.

Thousands of pounds will be spent on brightening up the T&G Allan alleyway between Back Riggs and Newgate Street in a campaign spearheaded by the Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade.

It was hoped that work would start before Christmas, but there have been setbacks and last month there was a lighting issue.

However, a Chamber spokesman said: “There have been a number of delays in the planning for the improvement of the alleyway, but we feel that everything should be ready to go in the very near future.

“Over the Christmas period there was no lighting in the alleyway but that has been restored and the new lighting and ceiling should be started on soon.”

County councillors Andrew Tebbutt and David Moore will provide up to £5,000 each from their small schemes allowances for the project, which will include installing lighting, signage and artwork, and brightening the paintwork.
