Horse owners urged to check their trailer

Free checks are being offered at a Morpeth vets to make sure horse trailers are up to the job.

Alnorthumbria Veterinary Group has teamed up with Thomas Sheriff of Alnwick to offer the session at its Fairmoor Equine Clinic.

The vets have taken action following recent cases when trailer or wagon floors have given way during the transportation of horses, resulting in at least one fatality.

Accidents can occur when inadequate material is used for flooring.

Vet Kate Smith said: “I can’t say how important it is to get your trailer floor checked on a regular basis.

“What I have taken from the incidents we have had recently is that the recommended check once a year is not enough. Ideally, you should check your floor every two to three months, and at least once a year get an experienced, qualified person to do a thorough service and make repairs or replacements.”

The trailer floor clinic will take place at the vets between 10am and 2pm on Wednesday. To make an appointment or for more information, call 01670 897597.
