Housing appeals’ hearing begins

BATTLE has commenced once more over plans to build up to 200 homes at Loansdean.

Around 100 people turned up as a public inquiry began at Morpeth Town Hall on Tuesday to hear two appeals by Bellway Homes North East – one for 200 properties and the other for 186, on land south of The Chip.

The larger application had been dismissed at appeal last year, but the decision was challenged in the High Court over the interpretation of housing figures and a new inquiry was ordered.

While Northumberland County Council’s North Area Planning Committee rejected both applications, the authority has decided not to defend the appeal, leaving the South Morpeth Coalition (SMC) residents’ group to lead the opposition to the plans.

Planning Inspector Philip Major said the main issues to consider will be housing land supply, affordable housing, landscape impact, highways, flood risk and drainage, and planning policy.
