WHAT a kick in the teeth for the residents of south Morpeth.
Their celebrations at defeating plans for 200 homes in the countryside outside the town have been short-lived after Bellway announced it is not giving up the fight.
Of course it is the developer’s right to challenge the inspector’s appeal decision if it feels it has grounds, but residents must be wondering when this is all going to end.
And with another application due next month, it doesn’t look like being any time soon.
The county council already seems to be setting out its position, with a report dismissing the bulk of the inspector’s findings. Usually officers quote from appeal decisions when making recommendations on applications, but in this case it seems the inspector’s word is not final.
People will not need reminding that this is the authority that made a resolution in secret not to defend councillors’ decision to reject the Bellway scheme so perhaps it shouldn’t be a surprise that it doesn’t agree with Mr Rivett now.
One thing is clear, neither Northumberland County Council nor Bellway are making many friends in Loansdean right now.
• Fingers are crossed for more Morpeth Bloom success.
If it comes down to community effort, the town should surely be the Champion of Champions.
