A FORMER Morpeth man is hoping for Olympic inspiration as he takes on a gruelling charity challenge.
Julian Ruddick, who attended Abbeyfields, Newminster and King Edward VI schools, was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus four years ago.
The debilitating illness leads to an overactive immune system that attacks the body.
But less than a year after remission, Mr Ruddick has returned to his teaching post at Passmores Academy in Essex and is planning a five-day challenge of cycling, rowing and running over 320 miles next month.
The fund-raising venture will provide cash towards a specialist nurse research post in the Lupus Unit of St Thomas’ Hospital, London, as well as support Lupus UK, which will pass on its share to the Children’s Lupus Project in Alder Hey Hospital.
Mr Ruddick’s students and colleagues are also taking part in the challenge, along with his brother Simon, and support has been given by Hilton Hotels, NatWest and Rank Xerox.
