WHEN Northumberland mum Katy Clark struggled to find colourful accessories to brighten up her children’s bedrooms, she decided to create her own.

Now, 10 years later, her ideas and designs have turned into a successful business after she started receiving orders from as far away as the USA.

Based in Longhorsley, Katy has set up Ebie Jeebie, which specialises in designing and making quality children’s wall hangings for bedrooms and nurseries.

Within a week of setting up her website, orders were pouring in over the internet from all over Britain, plus California and Philadelphia in the USA, Spain and Norway for her eye-catching designs.

After studying textiles at Newcastle College of Art, she has worked as a freelance designer for the last 20 years, selling her work at craft fairs all over the UK, as well as her native Northumberland.

Now, in response to customer demand, Katy is preparing to expand her new business to create children’s duvets, floor cushions and educational textile books, and is expecting them to be equally as popular.

Her stunning wall hangings are printed on pure cotton using 100 per cent eco-friendly digital printing, and carry positive lifestyle messages to inspire children.

Katy, 45, who has two children Luke, 13, and 16-year-old Christopher, said: “Being a Mum of two boys, I wanted bold yet artistic children’s wall art but couldn’t find what I wanted so I began to develop my own ideas and products.

“I’m very passionate about children and supporting them, and I love philosophy and art so I have combined all three with Ebie Jeebie.

“All my inspiration has come from being a mum and from my own mum decorating my room when I was a little girl with bright, primary colours. That’s why I use toys, butterflies and rainbows in my work.

“I can still remember the colours and pictures that surrounded me as a child so the philosophy behind my business is to create inspirational images that will also become part of a child’s thoughts as they grow. Each design has a message which promotes spiritual growth and adventurous discovery.

“I have already had a great response from the website with orders from America and Europe. At the moment the ‘Play all day’ rabbit design is our most popular. It must have something with the holidays and Easter coming up.”

The uniqueness of Ebie Jeebie’s wall hangings is that you can create your own panel by connecting your chosen designs from the Ebie Jeebie website with an easy to use loop system. There are 11 designs to choose from.

They are also proving hugely popular with adults, who are even buying them to hang in kitchens, and she is expecting interest from nurseries, playgroups and primary schools in Newcastle and Northumberland.

“I like to promote a positive message as I’m really interested in philosophy, and that also appeals to adults who are wanting them to hang in their kitchens,” added Katy.

“You can go on the website and pick your own designs and message.”

All the designs are created by Katy and can be seen on her newly-launched website www.ebiejeebie.com or via Facebook under Ebie Jeebie. Prices range from £9.95 - £39.95.
