St Robert’s Church

Last year, on St Robert of Newminster’s Feast Day (June 7), the ladies of Morpeth CWL completed a sponsored walk taking in the seven bridges of the town.

This was the idea of Elizabeth Dixon, chairman at the time, and inspired by a similar event in Sydney Harbour, Australia, and part of a parish fund-raising initiative to amass funds required for the £300,000 required for church repairs.

One year later, the ladies, together with families and friends, were back in stride, and they set off again, full of smiles, chat, and friendship.

The weather was kind and the wanderers made short work of weaving back and forth to cross the River Wansbeck, possibly thinking of the history and stories attached to each one.

Soon, the ladies were enjoying teatime treats in the church hall, kindly served by Elphin Conroy and Pat Ibbetson – a mini marathon in its own right.

Each participant received a certificate, a just reward for an incredible sponsorship effort of £932.50.
