MORPETH Harrier Laura Weightman powered her way into the Women’s Olympic 1500m semi-finals this lunchtime with a superb run.
She finished sixth in the third of three heats to go through as an automatic qualifier after picking off two athletes on the home straight.
The 21-year-old ran a time of 4m07.65s, which although was around three seconds short of her personal best was good enough to see her through to join her GB colleagues Hannah England and Lisa Dobriskey, who had placed fifth and first respectively in the previous heats with clockings of 4m05.73s and 4m13.32s.
BBC television coverage showed an elated Weightman after the race and with an enthusiasm that was equally shown by her delighted coach, Steve Cram.
With a bit of luck, along with some hard graft, she will hopefully go on to reach Friday’s final in the semis on Wednesday evening. The first of these races is scheduled to start at 7.45pm.
