Lifeboat teams in the north carried out more than 1,000 rescues last year, newly released figures show.

From the 33 RNLI stations in the region, 930 people were rescued during 1,025 lifeboat launches, while RNLI lifeguards dealt with 1,905 incidents and helped 2,360 people.

Some 34.5 per cent of call-outs were to recreational craft, 22.5 per cent to people ashore, 17 per cent to people in the water and 16 per cent to fishing vessels. Machinery failure was the most common cause.
