MORPETH school students and a member of staff enjoyed a five-star day in the capital after making the shortlist for a national accolade.

The Student Voice Team at King Edward VI School was among the top six groups in the country for Outstanding Community Partnership at this year’s Times Educational Supplement (TES) Awards.

As well as the awards ceremony at the London Hilton Hotel on Park Lane, ambassadors Kate Charlton and Angus Kirk and Victoria Najafi – Head of Student Voice, Leadership and Enrichment – visited Harvey Nicholls and Harrods, including a special KEVI celebration at the Harrods Godiva Chocolate Bar.

The Student Voice Team’s community programme has recently included restoration and rededication of the school war memorial, winning the regional round of the BT Big Voice competition, receiving a commendation from the Duchess of Northumberland, holding a charity dinner in aid of SSAFA and putting together the Morpeth in Bloom Fest in the town’s Carlisle Park.

Kate said: “The day was full of fun and I was incredibly proud and privileged to represent the school at such a prestigious event. I still can’t believe we are recognised nationally for our incredible achievements.”

The TES awards ceremony was hosted by comedian and actor Rob Brydon and Angus was delighted to receive the Gavin and Stacey actor’s autograph at the event.

“I really enjoyed going to London as it’s not something I get to do every day,” he added. “The awards ceremony was fantastic – the food was great and Rob Brydon was really funny. I loved the day.”
