Contractors for Highways England will be resurfacing around 2.5 miles of the A1 between Felton and Newton on the Moor, starting on Monday.

The work will be carried out under a 24-hour-a-day contraflow system, which means traffic will travel in both directions on the southbound carriageway.

Some local side roads will be affected by the contraflow and local diversion routes will be in place.

Highways England project manager Steve Bishop said: "When complete, this project will provide drivers with safer and smoother journeys along this stretch of the A1 in Northumberland.

"Every effort is being made to ensure disruption to traffic and local residents is kept to a minimum, and we’ll be using a contraflow system on the southbound carriageway to keep vehicles running in both directions on the dual carriageway."

The project is expected to be completed by Wednesday July 6, depending on the weather.

Further south on the A1 at Morpeth, there will be a carriageway closure north and southbound, between 8pm and 7am with a diversion in place, from today (Tuesday, May 31) to Friday (June 3) as work continues on the northern bypass.
