Alert over suspected bogus cops

INVESTIGATIONS are under way after suspected bogus police officers called at a Ponteland home.

Two men claiming to be police officers visited an address off Western Way, saying they were from Sunderland and had a warrant to search the premises.

However, numerous inquiries have been made and there is nothing to confirm that they men were officers, although police are still liaising with neighbouring forces.

The incident happened last Thursday, at 6.05pm, and officers are keen to trace the men and establish if anything was taken from the home.

The suspects were smartly dressed in business suits and didn’t speak with local accents.

Acting Detective Superintendant Mark Donnalley said: “Inquiries are still ongoing into this incident and I’d appeal for anyone who saw the men in the area, or who has information to get in touch with police.

“The homeowners did exactly the right thing by contacting police. I’d like to remind residents to be vigilant, to not let cold callers into their house and if in doubt contact police.”

Anyone with information about the men or suspicious cars in the area at the time should contact police on 101, ext 69191, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
