Anne-Marie is Tory choice for election

A CAMPAIGNER who lives in Netherwitton will once again try to become an MP after securing a nomination to contest one of the county’s parliamentary seats.

An historic public vote to become the Conservative candidate for the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency at the next General Election was won by Anne-Marie Trevelyan.

Local Tories issued an open invitation to the public to choose the person to represent the party in a first for North East politics. More than 300 members of the public crowded into the Northumberland Hall in Alnwick’s Market Place to choose between Mrs Trevelyan, Chris Galley and Lucille Nicholson.

On the first round of voting by secret ballot, Mrs Trevelyan secured the necessary 50 per cent plus one to win the contest.

At the 2010 General Election she was second to Liberal Democrat Sir Alan Beith, although she secured an 8.3 per cent swing towards the Conservatives to give Sir Alan a smaller majority.

The Governor at Berwick Academy, who is also a Public Governor of the area’s local NHS Trust, is well-known for her campaigns to dual the A1 and roll out superfast broadband across Northumberland.

Mrs Trevelyan said: “I am thrilled that the public have chosen me to be their Conservative candidate for the next election.

“In reality, my campaigning work has never stopped and I look forward to working alongside local people for many years to come. My track record of delivering results for local people is behind the support I received at the Primary.”

John Rae, Chairman of the Berwick-upon-Tweed Conservative Association, added: “To get more than 300 people to turn up on a cold winter night was a very good response to opening up politics. The calibre of the candidates was first class and those present have chosen Anne-Marie to fly the flag for us in 2015.

“The whole idea was to engage with the public and show that the political process is interesting and vibrant.”
