Archers on target at Belsay Castle - SLIDE SHOW

SHARPSHOOTERS from throughout the North East and Cumbria turned out for Ponteland Archers' 14th annual longbow competition at Belsay Castle at the weekend.

The competition is one of only a few of its kind and there were three rounds: the Castle round, in which the distance shot is measured from one end of Belsay Castle to the other, the Novelty round, shot over different distances where the winner is the one with the greatest number of hits, and the Wand, where the first person to hit the 5cm post wins.

On Sunday there was a 'have-a-go' in which novices were invited to shoot at targets festooned with balloons.

The winners were presented with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, with the Gold medal winner receiving a mug decorated with a scene from a previous tournament. The winner of The Wand receives a horn whistle and this year for the first time, in addition to the medal, the Novelty round winner was presented with a DIY Longbow Kit in the form of a small English Yew tree.
