Ball to help fund school’s revised all-weather pitch

PLANS for a new sporting facility in Ponteland have been modified, but fund-raising for the initiative is continuing to go very well.

And there is another opportunity to support the all-weather artificial pitch project on a field next to Ponteland Middle School at an upcoming event.

Following a second feasibility study, it has been decided that a 9x9 sized surface should be installed and it will now be located next to the railway line. There will still be space for three five-a-side football games to take place at the same time.

Grant funding has been provided by a range of organisations, staff and students have done bits to help and more than £5,000 was brought in at a Christmas Fair in November, organised by the Friends of Ponteland Middle School.

The group’s treasurer, Helen Smith, is a higher level teaching assistant and she and other teaching assistants are currently preparing the arrangements for a ball at the Gosforth Marriott on Saturday, March 1.

Ponteland Middle School head Caroline Pryer said: “We needed to make a few changes after the second study and the process will take a bit longer because the new location means we need to get a licence in regard to the great crested newts.

“But the good news is that we’re closing in on our fund-raising target and hopefully lots of people will come along to the ball.”

The glamorous event has an Oscars theme and there will be a tombola and a ‘top 10’ raffle where each prize is written on a box and those who buy tickets can allocate them as they wish.

There will also be live music, a special Scottish Country dance and refreshments. Tickets priced £45 can be purchased from the school office, call 01661 824853.
