Beware the computer fault fraudsters

A FRESH warning has been issued about fraudsters who claim they have identified a fault with personal computers.

Trading Standards is receiving more calls about the scam previously reported throughout 2010/11.

Computer users are being contacted from companies, often based abroad, that state they have been made aware of a problem by the device’s operating system. They offer to repair this by accessing the computer remotely, which can lead to disclosure of personal passwords and any other security protection.

Northumberland County Council Business and Consumer Protection Manager Jimmy Power said: “These calls are likely to be fraudulent and so consumers should be particularly concerned when they receive this type of contact.

“Scams will often focus on the caller trying to scare consumers into parting with money or personal details for no good reason. Before you respond to these approaches we would advise that you seek professional computer guidance.”

Residents are advised not to give personal information or bank details via phone or email, even if the request appears genuine.

If you think you have received or been victim to a hoax email or telephone call, contact the Citizens Advice consumer service on 08454 040506.
