Boost for county’s apprentices

GOVERNMENT Minister Matthew Hancock has said he wants to do more to support both employers and apprentices in Northumberland.

Speaking after the North East Apprenticeship Summit at Northumberland College’s Kirkley Hall campus on Friday, the Minister for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning spoke about his desire to find out how best this can be done.

“I’ve come to Northumberland College to look at the work that it’s doing in supporting apprentices and more broadly serving the needs of the local community,” he said.

“Most of all I want to listen to apprentices and employers and talk about what more we can do to support apprenticeships in Northumberland.

“Apprenticeships are great value, both to employers and the apprentices themselves, and it’s our job to get that message out.

“The National Apprenticeship Service does a brilliant job and has more than succeeded in spreading the message.”

He added: “The message about the value of apprenticeships is growing, but we can always do more to build on that.”
