Broadband champion bids for backing
A COUNTY broadband champion has made the case for providing further support to residents in rural Northumberland to a key politician.
Chairman of the iNorthumberland Broadband Advisory Group Anne-Marie Trevelyan met with the new Minister responsible for broadband, Maria Miller, at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham.
The county council has so far managed to secure more than £30million from two Government schemes, which will help the installation of superfast broadband in some villages and hamlets.
“Our county has a uniquely challenging geography, which is why we need extra funds to roll out superfast broadband,” said Ms Trevelyan.
“Adequate investment in broadband infrastructure is so important for residents and businesses in our rural towns and villages. I am encouraged that the Minister clearly understands that rural areas need superfast broadband to compete globally and create jobs locally.
“Broadband access is increasingly necessary for children doing homework, businesses selling products and provision of health services, so 90 per cent coverage is not enough – we need to reach every property.
“The reality is that the communities which shout loudest are going to be first in line for investment so I am now collecting further information on the need for broadband in rural Northumberland to present to the Minister.”
