Calls for school food review over horsemeat

AN urgent review of school food supplies has been demanded following the horsemeat scandal.

County Conservatives are seeking a review into all meat purchases by Northumberland County Council over the last three years, including supplies for schools and other public facilities.

The Party says the review should look into the procurement process for food, countries that have supplied meat, measures that are in place to ensure supplies are genuine and the amount of testing done to prove that the type of meat ordered has been supplied.

Conservative Group Leader Peter Jackson said: “Residents and parents quite rightly need reassurance and answers to these questions.”

The calls follow the withdrawal of some processed beef products from supermarkets after they were found to contain horsemeat or pork.

There is no suggestion that council meat supplies have been affected.
