Carers bill welcomed

A GOVERNMENT draft bill which would offer more support to carers has been welcomed by the county council.

Recent announcements by the Department of Health to reform social care include a greater profile for carers and training programmes to help them provide effective support to their loved ones.

It is estimated that more than 7,000 people provide over 50 hours of unpaid care a week for a family member or friend due to illness or disability in Northumberland.

The authority’s executive member for adult care and well-being, Ian Lindley, said: “This is an important step forward in ensuring that carers are recognised for their contribution to society and can access the vital support that they need.”
