Charity police beat covers 21,000 miles
POLICE officers in Northumberland have completed their own Olympic challenge.
Members of both Northumberland and North Tyneside area commands were invited to walk or run 8,000 miles between them – the distance of the Olympic Torch Relay.
But not only did the Northumbria Police workforce come up to the mark, they exceeded it by more than 13,000 miles, notching up a total of 21,613 miles in just four weeks.
The challenge was open to all staff, with members taking part on their own or in teams of five, as part of the NHS Workforce Workfit programme, which helps businesses and agencies to create more opportunities for staff to get involved in physical activity.
Lead Advocate for the Better Health At Work Continuing Excellence Award Sarah Dodds said: “We’re so pleased with the efforts made by everyone who took part in this event and tremendously proud of their achievements.
“It’s good to know that both our operational officers and members of police staff are keeping fit and healthy, both at work and in their own leisure time.
“This all adds up to a fit workforce and a high quality policing service for the people living in North Tyneside and Northumberland.”
Trophies and medals were presented to participants. Police Community Support Officer Tim Slaney won the individual prize, the winning team were detectives from Wallsend and the winning cadet was Isaac Patterson.
