Dig in and plant a Jubilee wood
THE Woodland Trust is calling on Northumberland landowners to plant a large wildlife haven as a tribute to the Queen.
Through its Jubilee Woods project, the charity aims to help landowners, communities, schools and individuals plant a massive six million trees this year to celebrate the Jubilee with a living memorial.
Three million trees have already been planted and now the trust is looking for further support to plant the remaining three million this autumn.
As part of this prestigious scheme, hundreds of new woods will be created, including 25 Princess Woods – one for each year before the Queen was crowned at the age of 25. Each wood will be around 60 acres in size to mark the length of her reign.
A total of 11 landowners have already signed up and will have their natural gem registered in the Trust’s Royal Record, a book detailing all the Jubilee tree plantings which will be presented to the Queen, the Princess Royal, the British Library and the Government.
Georgina McLeod, Jubilee Woods director at the Woodland Trust, said: “Through this project, we want to make a real lasting contribution to the UK’s environment by planting millions of trees, but we can only do it with the public’s help.”
The charity has a dedicated team who can take care of everything, such as designing the woodland, helping with accessing grants and funding for planting, and inspecting the young trees.
