Dig in and reduce flood risk

LANDOWNERS in Northumberland are being encouraged to plant more trees.

The Woodland Trust says that planting trees in the county could make a real difference to local water quality and may reduce flood risk.

Trees and woods can help protect water courses from harmful chemicals, pollutants, soils and fertilisers, improving water filtration and intercepting nutrients and sediments.

By planting in flood catchments and upstream areas landowners can also help to reduce the local flood risk.

The trust is offering free, expert advice on woodland planting, as well as a site visit to ensure land is suitable. There is also grant support available.
