Dodgy drivers stopped in police clampdown
DODGY drivers have faced a police clampdown around Morpeth.
More than 1,000 vehicles have been stopped for checks in and around the town in recent weeks following complaints from residents about speeding and other driving offences.
Checks were carried out on 15 different occasions, with officers posted in Scots Gap, Mitford Road, the A196 Green Lane, Cambo, Hebron, Hartburn, Widdrington, Hepscott, Cresswell and Acklington.
A total of 1,080 vehicles were pulled over throughout September, resulting in nine warnings and two summons being issued for various offences.
Acting Inspector Sharon Wilmore-Greaves said: “The checks were carried out in areas where local residents have raised concerns.
“The officers’ presence has been a visible deterrent and the extra patrols were stepped up in the Cambo and Scots Gap areas in particular to provide a deterrent to speeding motorbikes at weekends when it has been dry.
“We continue to listen to and act on community concerns and take a robust approach to any issues brought to our attention.”
In addition, 40 vehicles were stopped in a joint initiative between Morpeth Neighbourhood Policing Team, HM Customs and Excise and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) to check for the use of illegal fuel, road traffic offences, stolen goods and to gather intelligence.
Four prohibition notices were issued and two drivers received on-the-spot £500 fines for using red diesel.
