Year 12 student Matthew Ross was jointly awarded the Young Physicist of the Year accolade for Ponteland High School at a prize ceremony at Durham University.

The other recipient of the prize, Year 10 student Dominic Burrin, could not attend due to being out of the country on a school trip to Paris. The initiative for schools in the region is run by the Durham University Outreach Office in conjunction with the Ogden Trust.
