Election for selection of Tories’ parliament candidate

THREE candidates have emerged in the race to be Conservative candidate for Berwick-upon-Tweed at the next General Election.

Chris Galley, Lucille Nicholson and Anne-Marie Trevelyan have been put forward and, in a new initiative announced earlier this month, residents who are registered to vote in the constituency can select their preferred candidate at an Open Primary next week.

Berwick-upon-Tweed Conservative Association Chairman John Rae said: “The huge appetite we are seeing for our selection meeting is a welcome sign that many people want to engage with politics and with the local Conservative Party.

“I am delighted to announce the names of the three excellent candidates who will appear at the Open Primary. On the evening, the public will put their questions to them and have the final say on who goes forward to contest the House of Commons seat.”

Ms Trevelyan, a chartered accountant, lives and works in Northumberland. She is a governor of Berwick Academy and Northumbria Healthcare Trust and is Campaign Director for the Dual The A1 and Broadband4Northumberland campaigns.

Mrs Nicholson is a farmer and businesswoman. She is currently Chairman of the North Durham Conservative Association and former Chairman of Conservative Business Relations (North East). She was educated at London University.

Mr Galley lives by the Otterburn Ranges where he runs a sheep farm. He has worked for Shell for 29 years and is currently the company’s Scheduling Manager.

He is Chairman at Border Park Rugby Club and Deputy Chairman of the Hexham Conservative Association.

The Open Primary takes place at Northumberland Hall in Alnwick on Friday, February 8, at 7pm.
