Employers celebrate benefits of apprenticeships
EMPLOYERS from around the region will come together next month to celebrate the value of apprenticeships at a special celebration and awards dinner hosted by Northumberland College.
The dinner will be held on Thursday, February 9, at the college’s conference venue, Kirkley Hall, near Ponteland.
Business representatives will be joined by guest speaker Alan Wallace, Employer Services Director at the National Apprenticeship Service, and will hear first-hand about the benefits that apprentices can bring to a company.
It is one of several events being organised by Northumberland College to mark National Apprenticeship Week which runs from February 6 to 10.
During the week, the college is holding two open events. Those interested in an apprenticeship as well as employers looking to recruit apprentices are invited to come along to the Ashington campus on Tuesday, February 7, or Kirkley Hall campus on Wednesday, February 8, any time between 4.30pm and 7pm to find out more.
The dedicated apprenticeship team will be available at the event to give advice and information on what apprenticeship training consists of, how to find an employer and the requirements for businesses thinking of taking on an apprentice. Those looking for full or part-time courses are also welcome to come along to speak to tutors about the range of training available.
Representatives from the college will be at JobCentre Plus in Ashington on Wednesday, February 8, from 10am to 2pm to advise those looking for work about apprenticeship training available at the college and show them how to search for vacancies.
Northumberland College is also taking part in a joint venture with Bernicia Group and Robert McAlpine builders during apprenticeship week, to convert a house in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea into a learning hive.
Nine Bernicia Group apprentices who train at Northumberland College will be carrying out various activities to help get the learning hive up and running for the local community to access learning opportunities and advice and guidance.
Students from the college’s Ashington and Kirkley Hall campuses will also be helping out with the project.
Horticulture and countryside students will make and plant bedding areas and trees for the community to grow their own fruit and veg and highways students will be laying new paths to ensure that the learning hive is accessible to all.
