Fabulous visitor inspires students
NEWCASTLE Eagles basketball star Fabulous Flournoy called into college campuses to help inspire students.
The player-coach hosted motivational talks at Northumberland College's Kirkley Hall and Ashington centres as part of a careers and progression fair.
He spoke to more than 800 students about his tough upbringing in the Bronx, New York, and how he created a better life for himself by channelling his energy into basketball.
College Enrichment and Careers Co-ordinator Margaret Saunders said: "The students really enjoyed Fab's talk. He is an exceptional motivational speaker and I'm sure his words would have inspired many.
"Like Fab, I believe the only thing that stops us from achieving our dreams is ourselves.
"Anything can be possible with hard work and a commitment to succeed.
"The fair was organised to help our students take the important next steps in their career planning.
"It was a great success and we hope to build on its success and make it an annual event."
The event, which was funded by AimHigher, included talks from other guest speakers, such as a student who spoke about studying at university and a representative from Changemakers who discussed volunteering.
The fair was also supported by local employers, including Alcan, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and the NHS.
