Farmers urged to take care
ELECTRICITY bosses have urged Northumberland’s farmers to be extremely careful around overhead power lines after a recent spate of accidents in which workers have put their lives at risk.
In the last two months, seven incidents have been reported to Northern Powergrid involving tractors or other machinery striking cables or support poles – including an incident at Blagdon in July which caused conductors to fall to the ground.
The distributor’s Head of Safety, Paul Norton, said: “Large parts of our cable network run over farmland. Overhead cables can be carrying anything up to 400,000 volts, so we would ask that all farmers remind their staff of the dangers of coming into contact with them and that striking them can be lethal.”
