Thousands of patients have used services at Morpeth NHS Centre in its first year of operation.

The NHS ‘super centre’, which houses both hospital and GP services, opened on the site of The Mount at Haggs Field in May 2013.

And in its first 12 months, almost 4,500 people have attended outpatient clinics, while more than 3,000 have been for radiology tests.

The centre offers a number of services provided by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, including diagnostics and physiotherapy that were previously delivered from the former Morpeth Cottage Hospital.

It is also the base for the trust’s community services, such as podiatry, speech and language therapy, district nursing, health visiting, oral health and child health.

And more than a dozen new outpatient clinics, including colorectal, orthopaedics, pain management and infectious diseases, have been added.

Specialist dental services are available for patients with complex needs who have been referred by a health or social care professionals, and two GP practices are based there.

The x-ray department is open Tuesday to Thursday, enabling patients to have diagnostic testing at the same time as other appointments and saving them another visit or a trip to a general hospital.

Outpatient Sister Carol Mills said: “We are delighted that it has gone so well, with thousands of people using the first-class facilities and being able to have their care locally. Our commitment is always to provide care in people’s local communities if it is appropriate and safe to do so.”

Consultant Surgeon Mr Mike Bradburn, who runs a colorectal clinic for patients with lower gastrointestinal problems and bowel cancer, said: “Patients are so much more at ease coming to a local centre such as Morpeth and feel more able to answer any questions. For a lot of people, especially the elderly, it removes a lot of the stress associated with travelling to a general hospital, particularly for those without their own transport.”
