Footbridge in collapse danger
A FLOOD damaged Morpeth bridge is thought to be near collapse.
The Herald reported last week that the Chantry Footbridge would be out of use for at least three months after suffering structural damage when it was hit by a tree trunk during the recent flood. But in the last few days its condition has deteriorated and now there are fears that it could collapse.
Northumberland County Council Bridges Manager Simon Rudman said: “We are putting all our efforts into designing and implementing a temporary support scheme, but at this stage I cannot be confident that such a scheme can be effected either in time or without putting the workforce in danger. We shall continue our efforts unabated in the hope that we can save the footbridge.”
The bridge is closed and pedestrians have been told to use other routes.
