From classroom to boardroom

MORPETH children showed an app-titude for technology to finish runners-up in a top regional competition.
Pupils at Chantry Middle School beat around 500 others from across the North East to take second place in the Newcastle Building Society (NBS) Boardroom Challenge.
The initiative asked the nine and ten-year-old competitors to come up with a business idea that would benefit the community while making a profit.
Chantry’s Toontastic team used the budget to support the Toby Henderson Trust Autism Development Centre through the creation of an iPad with autism related apps, sensory toys and a garden bench.
The youngsters impressed in the qualifying round to make it to the boardroom final where they had to pitch their idea to NBS staff, including Chief Executive Jim Willens.
Mr Willens said: “The standard of the finalists’ entries was tremendously high and they all deserve recognition for the efforts they put in to getting so far, but the ideas that the Chantry children came up with and the professional way in which they presented them to us made the team very worthy of the runners-up spot.”
The challenge, which was developed by the society in conjunction with the Newcastle Education Business Partnership, included a six-week curriculum learning package, teaching numeracy and literacy skills, and was part of a wider NBS Cornerstone of the Community programme to support local organisations through fund-raising and volunteering.
