Grant ups and downs

GRANT applicants had mixed fortunes when applying for funds from Morpeth Town Council.

The authority’s Finance and General Purposes Committee was forced to reject two applications, one by an individual seeking to support fund-raising for a charity event and the other by a student travelling to Uganda for voluntary work, as they do not fall within the criteria.

However, the committee awarded £50 to Stobhill Community Forum as a contribution to its costs for a Jubilee street party.

And £200 was given to the South East Northumberland Rail User Group (SENRUG) to offset charges from booking Morpeth Town Hall for meetings.

Mayor Mark Horton said: “It seems to me that SENRUG has done a lot of good for Morpeth in the past and has certainly done a lot of good work for the station.

“It is committed to having meetings in Morpeth, which are clearly working.”

Coun Les Cassie added: “I think SENRUG does a good job that is important to Morpeth residents and the town council would do well to support it.”
