Grants to ease bills

CANCER patients in Northumberland had to find extra financial support to cope with rising fuel bills.

Macmillan Cancer Support saw a dramatic spike in requests for grants at the end of 2012 and paid out £1,710 – 126 per cent higher than the normal weekly average.

A total of 66 per cent of recipients requested the funds for heating bills and, with rising energy costs, Macmillan says even more cancer patients will need support.

Fuel bills often rise for patients because they are spending more time at home and feel colder because of their illness.
