Gritting farmers can use red diesel

FARMERS in Northumberland have been reassured that they can use red diesel while gritting roads without fear of prosecution.

Under normal rules any vehicle that is clearing snow from public roads using a snow plough or other device is entitled to use the fuel, but only vehicles that are solely used for spreading material to deal with ice or snow can carry out gritting work while using it.

However, HM Revenue and Customs says that it recognises the important role farmers play in keeping rural roads clear and their tractors can continue to use red diesel while clearing snow or gritting public roads to provide access to schools, hospitals, remote dwellings and cut-off communities.
