Grounds for learning
A SPECIAL event is taking place on Sunday to celebrate a Morpeth allotment project.
The Tommy’s Field Community Garden Festival provides residents with an opportunity to discover more about the plots and the creation of the garden facility, as well as enjoy a range of outdoor activities.
These include apple pressing, bug hunts, face painting, nature trails, live music and talks on giant vegetables and seed banks. There will also be some guided allotment tours.
It will be delivered by Groundwork North East and Tommy’s Field Allotment Association with the support of the Greater Morpeth Development Trust as part of the Heritage Open Days programme.
The association had wanted to transform an area of land that had fallen into disuse as nearby large sycamores created too much shade for growing, as well as taking most of the nutrients out of the soil.
Funding of £30,000 for the venture was provided by Marks and Spencer through its 5p carrier bag charges, with additional support coming from a £10,000 Lottery grant.
This enabled a landscape architect from Groundwork to design the community garden to include space for growing food, areas to teach allotment skills, sensory plants, wildflowers and wildlife-friendly areas to increase the biodiversity of the site, and volunteers to put it together.
The event will take place between 10am and 2pm. Refreshments will be provided.
