Health workers spread the word on hygiene

HEALTH workers have been visiting every care home in Northumberland to spread the word on hygiene.

The initiative, by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, aims to educate staff, residents and visitors on how to reduce the spread of infection, particularly Norovirus, the ‘winter vomiting bug’.

The virus is highly infectious and spreads rapidly in care homes and hospitals.

The Community Infection Control Team has been advising people to avoid visiting loved ones if they are unwell themselves until they have been symptom-free for at least 48 hours, and they have been reminded of the importance of washing their hands with soap and water.

This should be done as a routine before handling food, after using the toilet, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, after touching animals, after handling rubbish, after changing a nappy, before and after touching an unwell person, and before and after visiting a care home or hospital.

Infection Prevention and Control Practitioner Susan Besbrode said: “We know that winter bugs like Norovirus spread very quickly in the community and in care homes, which is why we’re taking this pro-active approach to educate people as much as possible on preventative measures before the winter sets in.”
