THERE’S a new addition to Morpeth’s high street after St Oswald’s Hospice opened a shop.

The Bridge Street outlet opened on St David’s Day on Friday.

Customers were treated to daffodils and cupcakes, while a ‘search for David’ resulted in David Marshall, from Bedlington, coming forward to open the store.

He said: “When I heard about this opportunity I jumped at the chance to help St Oswald’s.

“When my Dad was at the hospice they made us feel like he was a priority, both during his treatment and his last few days. They made sure we knew what was going on, which is probably the most reassuring thing any family can ask for in that situation. I will honestly be grateful for the rest of my life to the nurses that were working that night.”

The shop sells clothes, accessories, books, DVDs, CDs and household goods, helping to raise some of the £9.5million needed each year to run the North East hospice.

St Oswald’s has just received a boost courtesy of Longhirst schoolboy Arran Kirk who gave up sweets, chocolate, cake and biscuits for almost a month to raise £33. The nine-year-old, who attends the Royal Grammar School, completed his challenge between December 1 and Christmas Day and has now handed over the proceeds.

He said: “We have to think of people that are less fortunate than us and I know there are people who are ill and not able to have fun because of their illnesses. I thought if I raised some money it would help them.”

Arran hopes to raise further cash by taking part in the Junior Great North Run.
