Staff at Longhirst Hall are coming to terms with losing their jobs without warning.

It has emerged that the workers at the hotel and business venue were told on Friday morning that it was closing with immediate effect and within minutes, vans arrived to collect items from the premises.

The events took place after the tenant management company which runs that part of the site, Hotel Lease (Number 3) Ltd, ceased trading.

Meanwhile, dozens of couples have been left in the lurch as they were set to get married at Longhirst in the coming weeks.

Chris Worswick was due to marry fiancé Bronia Bourke on Saturday after paying the Hall £3,500. They have spent the weekend frantically trying to make alternative arrangements.

He said he was not contacted by the hall and only found out the news online.

The closure does not affect the Decoro spa next to the hall and the sports facilities elsewhere on the site – Morpeth Cricket, Hockey and Tennis Club and Longhirst Hall Golf Club.

Scott McGregor, director with Grainger Corporate Rescue and Recovery, which is waiting to be appointed as liquidator, said: “The company has ceased trading and it has lodged a petition with a court (in Scotland) to appoint a liquidator.

“This means that the hotel is now closed.”
