Investigation into blocked culvert

Investigations will be carried out into a blocked culvert at Morpeth allotments.

The culvert running through Middle Greens allotment site has become blocked, either from debris or collapsed pipework.

Both Northumberland County Council and the Environment Agency have denied responsibility for the culvert so Morpeth Town Council, as landlord of the site, will have to carry out the necessary work.

At a meeting of the town’s Property and Asset Management Committee, Chairman Andrew Tebbutt said: “This is potentially a problem. We are going to have to do a bit of investigation.

“We are a bit annoyed that we are left with this problem. We understood initially it was one between the county council and the Environment Agency.

“It could be that it is just blocked with debris. It was reported that it had collapsed, but that might not be the case.”

Coun Les Cassie said: “I think it is right that it is our responsibility and we just need to fix it. It is a critical piece of drainage.”
